Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs is owned and operated by David and Alison, producing tasty pastured free-range eggs from their small family-owned farm in Meadows, only 45km from the city of Adelaide, in the Adelaide Hills.
Our hens live in large paddocks with access to pasture, fresh water, and balanced feed. They shelter and lay their eggs in a mobile chicken caravan. The hens are integrated into the farm's beef cattle rotation and help to spread manure, control pests and add nitrogen to the soil to boost pasture growth.
The current stocking rate is less than 150 birds/hectare.
We commenced a pastured free range egg enterprise in June 2019 with 130 hens in one chicken caravan. The eggs were principally sold at the roadside utilising an honesty system under our Hens in the Meadow label. A second caravan was made by David, which tripled production. It was time to look for an egg grading machine. This led to our expansion of 2500 hens in June 2020 when we purchased Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs as a going concern, including the grading machine!
Eggs are supplied under our Adelaide Hills Pastured Eggs label direct to Cafes and Restaurants, Foodland Supermarkets, Butchers and Chocolatiers in East Adelaide and the Southern Adelaide Hills.
We still sell eggs at the roadside under our Hens in the Meadow label, using a vending machine. This allows customers to pay via credit and receive change. We believe it is the first egg vending machine in the hills and has certainly attracted some interest.
From May 2021 we started supplying eggs at the Willunga Farmer's Market on a fortnightly basis, but we now support the market weekly. The market showcases the diversity of Farming in the Willunga and Fleurieu area's, and we're happy to be a part of it. We'd love to see you there.
Our girls love to roam free with room to move and explore. On average, 150 hens per hectare, that's one hen per 65 square metres, so there's lots of natural feed for bright tasting eggs.
